TV Guide: Early Evening (6:30pm – 8pm)

Great British Menu -- BBC Two, 6:30pm

Four chefs compete for Northern Ireland with canapes, starters and fish dishes inspired by the British film industry. The creative brief -- the British film industry -- is an unusual enough prompt to produce some properly weird dishes. On iPlayer.

EastEnders -- BBC One, 7:30pm

Elaine and Ian are still not seeing eye to eye, Penny's backed into a corner over her situation, and the Trueman family are worried about Patrick. It's a mid-week episode -- the kind that sets things up rather than pays them off -- but there's enough going on in Walford to hold your attention. On iPlayer.

UEFA Women's Champions League: Chelsea v Arsenal -- BBC Two, 7:30pm (kick-off 8pm) ★

The first leg left everything to play for, which is exactly where you want to be heading into the second. Chelsea and Arsenal are the two biggest clubs in the women's game in England right now, and this is a proper European knockout tie with something on the line. Whoever goes through tonight will believe they can win the whole thing. BBC Two coverage from 7:30pm with kick-off at 8pm. On iPlayer.

TV Tonight: Prime Time (8pm onwards)

The Repair Shop -- BBC One, 8pm

Three stories tonight, all good ones. Dean is working on a pair of shoes with a history that apparently catches everyone in the workshop off guard. Mark is reviving a reel-to-reel tape recorder -- the kind of item that's easy to dismiss until you hear what was recorded on it. And Sonnaz and Angelina are teaming up on a battered brooch that comes with a difficult story attached to it. Reliable Wednesday night viewing. On iPlayer.

Warship: Life in the Royal Navy -- Channel 5, 8pm (NEW SERIES)

Kate Humble and JJ Chalmers are aboard HMS Iron Duke, a Type 23 frigate going about its business on routine North Atlantic patrol. In the first episode, that routine business takes an unexpected turn: the ship is called in to shadow a Russian submarine that has developed a fault and is at risk of going wrong in a very public way. It's a decent premise for episode one -- exactly the kind of incident that makes you understand why these ships exist. On My5.

A Woman of Substance -- Channel 4, 9pm

The penultimate episode of Barbara Taylor Bradford's sweeping saga, which has been tracking Emma Harte from her beginnings in Edwardian service through to the sharp-elbowed businesswoman she becomes. Tonight, with Britain at war, Emma makes a financial decision that could rescue or ruin everything she has spent decades building. Brenda Blethyn brings the older Emma a ferocious quality, and Jessica Reynolds is sharp and watchable as the younger Emma. Concludes tomorrow. Full series on Channel 4 streaming.

Ambulance -- BBC One, 9pm

Christopher Eccleston narrates episode four of six, following the Yorkshire Ambulance Service through a busy shift. Critical care paramedic Matt attends to a patient called Neil, administering pain relief before Neil is rushed to hospital to be assessed for suspected head and neck injuries. The show keeps earning its place in the schedule. On iPlayer.

The Teacher -- Channel 5, 9pm

Helen is now investigating Cressida's background, having pieced together that her adversary is not who she presents herself to be. Sam, meanwhile, is being drawn steadily into Cressida's orbit in a way that isn't going to end well for anyone. Episode three of four -- the series concludes tomorrow night. Full series on My5.

The 'Burbs -- Sky One, 9pm and 10pm (NEW SERIES)

Two episodes back to back tonight for the launch of this new comedy-horror series, loosely inspired by the 1989 Tom Hanks film. Jack Whitehall and Keke Palmer play Rob and Samira -- a couple who've just moved into the suburbs and immediately find their peace disturbed by the Victorian house across the road, which has gone up for sale and whose potential buyers seem deeply suspicious. Whitehall does anxious-suburban-bloke reasonably well and Palmer adds some proper comic energy. Two episodes tonight. Catch up via Now.

Chauvet: Humanity's First Great Masterpiece -- BBC Four, 9pm

French documentary about the Chauvet cave in the Ardèche, discovered in 1994, which contains some of the oldest known figurative paintings in the world -- roughly 37,000 years old. Lions, bears, aurochs and wolves, drawn by people who clearly knew what they were doing 37 millennia ago. The documentary follows the scientists who have spent their careers studying the cave, which is sealed to the public and will stay that way. Worth your time if you're in the mood for something slow and beautiful. On iPlayer.

TV Guide UK: Late Night

Hatton Garden: The Great Diamond Heist -- Channel 4, 10pm

The 2015 Hatton Garden safe deposit robbery has been adapted, dramatised, written about at length, and turned into more than one television production since the gang was convicted. What makes this documentary worth 90 minutes of your Wednesday night is that it goes past the courtroom and asks the question that the legal proceedings never fully answered: where are the stolen millions now? Ringleader John "Kenny" Collins features, and the answer -- or rather the absence of a complete answer -- is more interesting than anything the drama adaptations managed. On Channel 4 streaming.

Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story -- BBC Two, 11pm

Episode two of three. The story of Steven Stayner, who was abducted in California in 1972 and held for seven years, continues with a heroic escape and a family reunion that doesn't go the way you'd hope. What makes this series different from most true crime is that it's equally interested in the sensationalised TV movie that was made about Stayner afterwards -- and what that did to the family. Tough watching, but worth it. On iPlayer.

Sport

Football: UEFA Women's Champions League -- Chelsea v Arsenal -- BBC Two from 7:30pm, kick-off 8pm. Quarter-final second leg. Both sides with realistic ambitions. On iPlayer.

Cricket: IPL -- Lucknow Super Giants v Delhi Capitals -- Sky Sports Cricket from 2:50pm. Afternoon fixture from India.

Snooker: Tour Championship -- Channel 5 from 12:30pm. Quarter-final action from Manchester Central, with Shaun Murphy facing the winner of the Trump v Allen tie.

TV Guide UK: Final Verdict

The tv guide tonight is shaped around two channels pulling most of the weight. Channel 4 has the better prime-time pairing -- A Woman of Substance at 9pm leads neatly into the Hatton Garden documentary at 10pm, which is the most interesting thing on tonight and the one most worth staying up for. BBC One offers a comfortable double of The Repair Shop and Ambulance, which is a reliable combination if you want your Wednesday evening to feel steady rather than surprising.

The Women's Champions League on BBC Two is the sport story of the night from 7:30pm, and if Chelsea or Arsenal have supporters in your household, there won't be much dispute about what goes on at 8pm.
