Sport
Saturday is enormous for sport. The tv guide today is essentially two schedules fighting for your attention.
The Grand National leads everything. ITV1 carries build-up from 12:45pm, with live race coverage starting at 3:15pm and the race itself off at 4pm. Aintree is the one race of the year that people who have never bet in their lives suddenly want to watch. Still one of the biggest single sporting events in the British calendar, and still completely unpredictable.
Women's Six Nations gets a double header on the BBC. England v Ireland is live on BBC One from 1:30pm, Wales v Scotland follows on BBC Two from 4:25pm. Both matter for the table.
Rugby League Challenge Cup -- BBC Two, 1pm -- Hull KR take on York Knights in live quarter-final action from early afternoon.
The Masters Round 3 -- Sky Sports Golf, from 4:30pm (also Sky Sports Main Event from 7:45pm). Saturday at Augusta is traditionally where the tournament proper takes shape. If the leaderboard is interesting coming into the weekend, this afternoon should be worth watching.
Liverpool v Fulham -- Sky Sports Main Event, 5pm. Premier League Saturday Night Football, live from Anfield.
Norwich v Ipswich -- Sky Sports Main Event / Football, 11am (live). The East Anglian derby is always worth watching regardless of league position, and both sides will be giving this everything. Replay on Sky Sports Football from 7:30pm.
Live NHL -- ITV4, 5:30pm. Boston Bruins v Tampa Bay Lightning for any hockey fans in need of a fix.
Match of the Day closes out BBC One late at 10:25pm with five Premier League games, Arsenal v Bournemouth among them.
TV Guide: Early Evening (5:40pm – 8pm)
Celebrity Bridge of Lies – BBC One, 5:40pm
Series 3, episode 1. Ross Kemp hosts the celebrity true-or-false game show where contestants must cross a virtual bridge by answering questions correctly. Tonight is an athletes special, with Kriss Akabusi, Paralympic wheelchair racer Sammi Kinghorn, Matt Baker and Gladiator Athena -- Karenjeet Kaur-Bains -- taking part. Available on BBC iPlayer.
Blankety Blank – BBC One, 6:25pm
Series 5, episode 2. Bradley Walsh is back behind the podium for Saturday's most reliably silly game show. Richard Ayoade, Alex Jones and Nadia Jae join the panel. Available on BBC iPlayer.
Britain's Got Talent – ITV1, 6:45pm
The auditions roll on. No spoilers here about what gets through and what doesn't, but at this stage of the series the audition episodes settle into a rhythm and you start to get a feel for who might actually go somewhere. Available on ITVX.
Eric Morecambe: My Comedy Hero by Miranda Hart – BBC Two, 7pm
Episode 1 of 3. Miranda Hart goes on a road trip around Britain in pursuit of her comedy idol. Morecambe is by some distance the most beloved British comedian of the 20th century, and you can tell Hart actually cares about this -- it's warmer than a straight biography would be. Available on BBC iPlayer.
Michael McIntyre's Big Show – BBC One, 7pm
Series 6, episode 3 of 6. Nile Rodgers and Chic perform tonight, with the Nile-oke segment presumably involving a legend who's seen some things. McIntyre's Big Show does what it does -- big studio, loud audience, solid Saturday evening stuff. Available on BBC iPlayer.
TV Tonight: Prime Time (8pm onwards)
Celebrity Sabotage – ITV1, 8pm
The concept here is brilliant in a low-rent sort of way. Members of the public think they're competing in a genuine military-themed survival series called SOS: Survive or Surrender, overseen by ex-Marine Jason Fox. What they don't know is that a group of celebrities are hiding nearby, watching everything and actively sabotaging their efforts. Tonight, Sam Thompson disguises himself as a bale of hay -- genuinely, an actual bale of hay -- to infiltrate the challenges. Joel Dommett and GK Barry opt for badger costumes. If that sentence made you smile, you'll enjoy this. If it didn't, maybe find something else. Available on ITVX.
The Morecambe and Wise Show 1970: The Lost Tape – BBC Two, 8pm
A previously lost episode of Morecambe and Wise from 1970, believed gone for decades, has been recovered and broadcast for the first time. This sort of archive find doesn't happen often -- there's no recreation here, no dramatisation, just the actual thing that somehow survived. Following the Miranda Hart documentary at 7pm, BBC Two has made a proper occasion of the Morecambe material tonight. Available on BBC iPlayer.
Casualty – BBC One, 8:45pm
Episode 11 of 12. Casualty pulls a proper structural trick tonight. The episode opens at a funeral, with senior nurse Stevie preparing a eulogy. Who's in the coffin? That question hangs there as the action cuts back two weeks, to a CQC inspection of the ED that frames everything that follows. It's emotionally manipulative -- there's no other honest way to describe it -- but it works, because you spend the whole episode scanning for clues instead of just watching things happen. Kim's secret storyline moves forward too. Available on BBC iPlayer.
McCartney: The Hunt for the Lost Bass ★ – BBC Two, 8:45pm
This is the one to seek out tonight if you're not already committed elsewhere. Paul McCartney's original Hofner bass guitar -- the violin-shaped instrument that defines the sound of the early Beatles -- was stolen from a roadie's van in 1972 and remained missing for decades. This documentary follows the fan-powered investigation to track it down, with several procedural twists that you wouldn't necessarily expect from a programme about a lost bass guitar. McCartney himself turns up, which elevates the whole thing. A proper piece of rock and roll history, told well. Available on BBC iPlayer.
Flintoff – National Geographic, 9pm
Two hours on Andrew Flintoff -- the career, the comeback, the Top Gear crash in 2022 that caused life-altering facial injuries, and what comes after. Flintoff has made relatively few media appearances since the accident, so there's material here that hasn't been available before. Michael Vaughan and David Lloyd cover the cricket career with their usual candour, while James Corden and Jack Whitehall -- his A League of Their Own colleagues -- offer the other side. The film deals directly with Flintoff's altered appearance rather than skirting around it, which is the right call. Previously on Disney+, tonight on National Geographic.
Death of a Prince – Channel 5, 9pm
The story of Prince William of Gloucester, first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 1972 aged just 30 when his plane crashed during the Goodyear International Air Trophy race in Staffordshire. His romance with Zsuzsi Starkloff, a divorced Hungarian model, was considered deeply problematic by the royal family of the time. A life compressed into one documentary, and the gap between who he was and who he was expected to be makes it worth watching. Available on My5.
Hidden Assets – BBC Four, 9:35pm and 10:25pm
Series finale, double bill. The Criminal Assets Bureau close in on KYV haulage in what promises to be a proper send-off for the Irish-Belgian crime thriller. Claire is in Bilbao working to dismantle the drug-trafficking operation, and the double episode format means the story gets room to land properly rather than being crammed into a single hour. If you've been watching the series, clear the schedule. Available on BBC iPlayer.
TV Guide UK: Late Night
The Jonathan Ross Show – ITV1, 10pm
New episode. Sir Michael Palin, Catherine Tate and Anna Maxwell Martin fill the sofa, with rapper Aitch as the musical guest. Palin in particular tends to produce something worth watching in chat show settings -- he's been around long enough to have run out of things to be careful about. Available on ITVX.
Match of the Day – BBC One, 10:25pm
Five Premier League games, with Arsenal v Bournemouth the main attraction given where both sides sit in the table. Available on BBC iPlayer.
No Hard Feelings – Channel 4, 10pm
Jennifer Lawrence's 2023 comedy. Sharp, frequently funny, and Lawrence is very good in it. A decent late option if the sport and drama have left you wanting something lighter. Available on Channel 4 streaming.
Saturday Night Live UK – Sky One, 10pm
Jack Whitehall hosts this week's edition, with Jorja Smith performing. Whether SNL UK has found its groove yet is a matter of some debate, but the talent on stage tonight is not the problem.
True Detective – Sky Atlantic, 10pm
Season 4 (Night Country), episode 1. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the fourth season of the anthology crime series, set in the Alaskan wilderness. Eight men vanish and Navarro convinces Danvers the case relates to a past death. Tonight is the season opener, so it's a good time to start.

In the evening, McCartney: The Hunt for the Lost Bass on BBC Two at 8:45pm is the one -- warm, well told, and the ending actually surprises. Casualty at 8:45pm on BBC One is worth it for the structural trick alone. And Flintoff on National Geographic at 9pm is two hours well spent for anyone who followed the story.
TV Guide UK: Final Verdict
Saturday's tv guide is stacked. The Grand National takes the afternoon, the Women's Six Nations fills the BBC, and the evening is a toss-up between entertainment (Celebrity Sabotage, Blankety Blank, Britain's Got Talent) and the heavier stuff (Casualty, McCartney, Flintoff, Hidden Assets).
If you're watching one thing tonight that isn't the National, make it McCartney: The Hunt for the Lost Bass on BBC Two at 8:45pm. A mystery about a stolen bass guitar, an actual Beatle, and a surprisingly good ending. That's a Saturday evening sorted.
