Friday's tv guide is dominated by one thing: BBC One has given its entire prime-time evening to the Paraverse. Beyond Paradise series 4 premiere at 8pm, Death in Paradise series 15 finale at 9pm, back to back. EastEnders isn't on tonight -- the two shows take the full slot. The tv listings have plenty beyond that: England v Uruguay live on ITV1 from 7pm, a new Gogglebox at 9pm, and the freeview tv guide has options across all the main channels. Check the tonight page for a real-time summary, or the channels list for everything that's on.

TV Guide: Early Evening (7pm – 8pm)

England v Uruguay – ITV1, from 7pm

Coverage begins at 7pm ahead of kick-off at 7:45pm at Wembley. This is a friendly rather than a competitive fixture, which usually means some experimental selections and the kind of comfortable pace that suits a Friday night. England are in reasonable form going into the summer; whether that translates here or whether it's another forgettable 1-0 against limited opposition is the question. Either way, it's live football at Wembley and it fills the early evening neatly. Available on ITVX.

Extraordinary Portraits with Bill Bailey – BBC One, 7:30pm

The arts series returns with sculptor Nick Elphick taking on an unusual subject: Darryn Frost, the man who grabbed a narwhal tusk from a wall display and used it to help restrain the London Bridge terrorist in November 2019. Frost is not comfortable being cast as a hero, which turns out to make the portrait harder and more interesting than most. "I'd hate it if it looked like some heroic figure," he says before the work starts. It doesn't. Bill Bailey guides Elphick through the process. Brief but worth catching. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Elkie Brooks Night – BBC Four, from 7pm

BBC Four celebrates the singer's 80th birthday with a full evening of archive material running through to the early hours. TOTP appearances, concert recordings, and a BBC special are all in the mix. If you've ever thought Elkie Brooks was unfairly overlooked in the rock and blues canon, this is the case being made for her over several hours. Good background viewing if you want the television on but don't need to watch attentively.

TV Tonight: Prime Time (8pm onwards)

Beyond Paradise – BBC One, 8pm (SERIES 4 PREMIERE)

Humphrey Goodman returns to Devon for a new series, and the first obstacle placed in his way is a painfully corporate one: a senior officer has decided that his team's headcount doesn't match the square footage of the station. What this means in practice is that Humphrey may have to let someone go -- Esther, Margo, or Kelby. The show handles this kind of threat with its usual lightness -- it's not really going to fire anyone, and we all know it -- but the murder investigation running alongside is decent: a crime novelist whose death mirrors the plot of his final novel. Good enough to build from. A solid start to the series. Episode 1 of 6. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Death in Paradise – BBC One, 9pm ★ (SERIES 15 FINALE)

Fifteen series. That's not a statistic you can gloss over. Death in Paradise started in 2011 and has kept going, in various forms and with various lead detectives, through cast changes, spin-offs, and fifteen years of BBC scheduling. Tonight DI Mervin Wilson -- Don Gilet, who's been excellent in the role -- closes out the series with a case involving a sea creature reportedly lurking offshore and a niece who has arrived to stay at the worst possible time.

The formula -- sunshine, a Brit out of place, a closed-room puzzle, light comedy -- turns out to be remarkably durable. Nobody in 2011 would have called fifteen series. Whether you've been watching since the start or you've just dipped in occasionally, tonight is worth making time for. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Dispatches: Keir Starmer – Where Did It All Go Wrong? – Channel 4, 8pm

LBC journalist and podcaster Lewis Goodall has put together a Dispatches examining the gap between Labour's landslide in 2024 and where the party finds itself now. He talks to politicians, advisors, pollsters and journalists to piece together what happened to a government that started with an overwhelming mandate. The programme covers the external factors -- Trump, the economic inheritance -- alongside the internal ones. A straightforward political documentary on a subject that has generated a lot of heat and varying amounts of light. Available on Channel 4 streaming.

Gardeners' World – BBC Two, 8pm

Monty Don on seed-sowing, which he makes sound easier than most gardening books do, plus work in his Woodland Garden dividing ferns. Frances Tophill goes deep on miniature daffodils -- a growing niche, apparently -- and Sue Kent visits a gardener in Llanelli who has created her own seed library. This time of year the programme is basically a checklist of things you've been meaning to get round to, delivered without judgment. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Gogglebox – Channel 4, 9pm

New episode. The regulars react to the week's television, which this week has included everything from World Cup play-offs to political documentaries. The Last Leg follows live at 10pm with guests Charlotte Church and Nabil Abdulrashid -- and given the week's news, they'll have material. Both available on Channel 4 streaming.

Billy Idol Should Be Dead – Sky Arts, 9pm

A documentary on Billy Idol, new on Sky Arts tonight. The title comes from the fairly straightforward observation that what he put himself through in the 1980s should, by most actuarial reasoning, have been fatal. The film goes beneath the familiar image -- the sneer, the bleached hair, the leather -- to find something more complicated, and Idol turns out to be a better interviewee than you might expect, self-aware in ways the public persona doesn't always suggest. Early critics found him too polished for punk; his response to that on camera is one of the film's better moments. Available on Now.

TV Guide UK: Late Night

The Last Leg – Channel 4, 10pm (LIVE)

Live tonight with Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker. Charlotte Church and Nabil Abdulrashid join as guests. The Last Leg works best when there's enough political and cultural noise in the week for the panel to have something to push against, and this particular week has provided plenty. Available on Channel 4 streaming.

Big Cats 24/7 – BBC Two, 9pm

Episode four of six. A lion pride with 14 cubs and no adult males is the ongoing concern -- the mums are doing everything, and at least one cub isn't keeping up. But the standout scene tonight involves a cheetah who catches a small impala and then keeps it alive, distressed and running, so her cubs can practice the kill. Nature documentaries do this occasionally. It stays with you. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Femme – BBC Two, 11pm

A 2023 thriller about a drag performer who is brutally assaulted and subsequently seduces his attacker as a form of revenge. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett spent three weeks learning to walk in heels for the role; George MacKay spent two months in the gym and arrived each day to have elaborate tattoos applied. The physical preparation by both actors shows in what they deliver. It's a dark, clever, well-made film and a strong late-night pick. Rated 15. Available on BBC iPlayer.

The MOBO Awards: Access All Areas – BBC One, 11:25pm

The MOBO Awards mark their 30th anniversary with a ceremony at Manchester's Co-Op Live, hosted by rapper Eve and comedian Eddie Kadi. BBC Radio 1Xtra's DJ Target goes backstage for performances and interviews with Lauryn Hill, Olivia Dean and Slick Rick. Little Simz leads the nominations, up for Album of the Year for Lotus. Followed at 12:25am by Mobo at 30: Greatest Moments. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy – ITV1, 10:50pm (FINAL EPISODE)

The true crime documentary concludes at Illinois Correctional Center in May 1994, where Gacy is executed by lethal injection. The programme makes a deliberate choice to keep the execution itself off screen, placing the viewer in the position of the victims' families, who were kept from being able to witness it directly. A considered ending to a difficult series. Available on ITVX.

Football: England v Uruguay -- ITV1, from 7pm (k/o 7:45pm). International friendly at Wembley. Available on ITVX.

Death in Paradise's series 15 finale on BBC One at 9pm is the clear standout. Fifteen series is a remarkable run for any drama, and tonight closes the book on it. Watch Beyond Paradise at 8pm first for the full Paraverse experience. If it's sport you're after, England v Uruguay is live on ITV1 from 7pm. The Billy Idol documentary on Sky Arts at 9pm is the late-evening discovery worth finding.

TV Guide UK: Final Verdict

Friday's tv guide is straightforward for once. If you're watching BBC One, stay there from 8pm: Beyond Paradise at 8, Death in Paradise finale at 9, and a show that's been running since 2011 closes out its fifteenth series. That's the evening sorted.

If the football is more important, ITV1 has England v Uruguay from 7pm. Wembley, a friendly, Thomas Tuchel's squad, no particular pressure. Gogglebox and The Last Leg on Channel 4 do the 9pm-to-midnight shift reliably. And if you're up for something quieter, the Billy Idol documentary on Sky Arts at 9pm is genuinely good and will be harder to find next week.
