TV Guide: Early Evening (6pm -- 8pm)
It'll Be Alright on the Night -- ITV1, 7.30pm
Tom Allen takes the reins for a fresh batch of TV bloopers and on-air disasters. It's the sort of programme that shouldn't still work after all these decades, yet somehow a newsreader losing their composure or a weather map going haywire never stops being funny. Allen brings a cheeky energy that suits the format well -- he's clearly having a ball flicking through the archives of other people's worst professional moments. Gentle, stupid fun to ease you into the weekend.
MasterChef The Professionals -- BBC One, 7.30pm
The competition is properly heating up now, with the remaining chefs facing another demanding round. Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti are in typically exacting form alongside new host Matt Tebbutt, and the standard of cooking at this stage means the margins between staying and going are razor-thin. If you like watching supremely talented people sweat over a plate of food while a clock ticks down, this is your happy place.
A Place in the Sun -- Channel 4, 6pm
A new episode kicks off Channel 4's Friday evening with another set of property hunters searching for their dream bolt-hole abroad. It's comfort viewing of the highest order -- sun-drenched locations, budget negotiations, and that eternal question of whether to go for the sea view or the extra bedroom.
TV Tonight: Prime Time (8pm onwards)
Would I Lie to You? -- BBC One, 8.30pm
A brand new episode with a properly entertaining panel. Jonathan Ross, Kate Garraway, JB Gill and American comedian Michelle Wolf join Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell for another round of outrageous fibs and even more outrageous truths. Ross is always good value on WILTY because he can't keep a straight face, and Wolf -- if you haven't seen her Netflix specials -- brings a sharp, deadpan delivery that should clash beautifully with Mack's quickfire wit. This is one of those shows where the panel chemistry makes or breaks the episode, and on paper, this lot should spark off each other brilliantly.
Gogglebox -- Channel 4, 9pm
Friday night's most reliable pleasure. The families and friends of Gogglebox return to pass judgement on the week's television, and given they've had Winter Olympics coverage, soaps, documentaries and political chaos to chew through, there should be plenty of gold. The Malones, the Siddiquis, and the rest of the regulars remain the best unpaid TV critics in the country. Nobody asked them for their opinion, but we'd be lost without it.
Death in Paradise -- BBC One, 9pm
Series 15, episode 4, and Mervin is still finding his feet as the island's resident detective -- though "finding his feet" in Death in Paradise terms means solving elaborate murders while wearing linen in thirty-degree heat. The whodunit formula hasn't changed in fifteen series and honestly, why would it? The Caribbean scenery does the heavy lifting, the supporting cast are a delight, and the murder plots are just convoluted enough to keep you guessing without requiring a whiteboard. Friday night comfort telly done right.
The Graham Norton Show -- BBC One, 10.40pm ⭐
This is the one. Benicio del Toro, Jennifer Garner, Gordon Ramsay, Charli XCX on the sofa, and Foo Fighters performing. That's a guest list that would make most chat show producers weep with envy. Del Toro is famously unpredictable in interviews -- dry, funny, sometimes wonderfully bizarre -- and pairing him with Ramsay, who has zero filter, should produce some genuinely memorable moments. Garner is one of those guests who always has a good anecdote, and Charli XCX will keep things current. Then the Foos close it out. This is Norton at his absolute best: the right mix of Hollywood glamour, British chaos, and a band you'd actually want to hear. Stay up for this one.
Live at the Apollo -- BBC Two, 10pm
Ed Gamble hosts tonight's bill at the Hammersmith Apollo, and he's joined by Tom Davis and Judi Love. Gamble is a sharp compere who knows how to warm a room, Davis brings that hulking physical comedy presence that always lands with a live crowd, and Love is a force of nature on stage -- her energy is infectious and her crowd work is top-notch. Three very different comedians, which is exactly what you want from a Friday night stand-up show.
TV Guide UK: Late Night
The Last Leg -- Channel 4, 10pm
Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker go live with their weekly take on the news, joined tonight by Bridget Christie, Aisling Bea and Chloe Petts. Between the Winter Olympics, the political week we've had, and whatever else has happened that they can mine for comedy, this should be a lively one. Christie's dry, feminist comedy, Bea's sheer likeability and Petts' sharp observational humour make them three of the best guests this show books.
The Damned United -- BBC Two, 11pm
Michael Sheen gives one of his very best performances as Brian Clough in this 2009 drama about the legendary manager's catastrophic 44-day spell at Leeds United. If you've never seen it, Sheen completely inhabits Clough -- the arrogance, the insecurity, the brilliance. You don't need to care about football to enjoy this; it's a character study wrapped in a sports film. Followed by the late film slot, which is worth setting a reminder for.
Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy -- ITV1, 10.45pm
This US drama based on real events continues with Tovar and Kozenczak examining how systems failed to stop Gacy's crimes. The series dramatises the horrifying story of John Wayne Gacy, the Chicago contractor who murdered at least 33 young men in the 1970s while leading a public life as a community volunteer. Not one for the faint-hearted, but the dramatised format goes beyond the sensational headlines.
