TV Guide: Early Evening (7:30pm – 9pm)

Beyond Paradise – BBC One, 8pm

Series 3, episode 3. Humphrey Goodman's patch of Devon is the kind of place where apparently routine community events have a habit of turning very strange very quickly. Tonight the incident happens at a Dark Morris dancing performance in Shipton Abbott -- a gothic offshoot of traditional Morris dancing, all dark aesthetics and none of the village fete cheerfulness. One of the performers collapses mid-routine, and the cause turns out to be latex poisoning -- an extreme allergic reaction to the costume material. It's the sort of death that could only really happen in a very specific, very English context, and Beyond Paradise leans into the local texture better than most crime dramas of its type. Kris Marshall remains very watchable in the lead role. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Gardeners' World – BBC Two, 8pm

Frances Tophill is at Damson Farm in Somerset tonight, and the spring edition also covers practical advice on supporting garden birds as the season gets going. Joe Swift heads to Cornwall to find a gardener who has simply refused to let the relentless seaside weather interfere with what they're trying to grow. If you're already invested in the series, this is a typically satisfying instalment. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Primark vs John Lewis: Battle of the Brands – Channel 4, 8pm

New documentary. Consumer journalist Harry Wallop makes the case that Primark's recent push into homeware is, as he puts it, parking their tanks on John Lewis's lawn. The department store fought back with budget lines of its own, but the battle over the beauty market -- where Primark sells dupes of expensive products for a fraction of the price -- is where things get interesting. A decent primer in how modern high street retail actually works, without being boring about it. Available on Channel 4 streaming.

Extraordinary Portraits with Bill Bailey – BBC One, 7:30pm

Episode 3. Lindsay McKenna runs a self-funded rescue centre for exotic animals and campaigns for changes to the laws around online pet purchases. Her brief to the portrait artist is straightforward: she'd like the animals to feature prominently, with herself somewhere in the background if possible. The artist is Ricky Wilson, frontman of the Kaiser Chiefs and -- as the programme reveals -- a former art teacher. He produces something spectacular and then jokes he won't be changing his day job. Available on BBC iPlayer.

TV Tonight: Prime Time (9pm onwards)

Have I Got News for You – BBC One, 9pm

Episode 2. Monty Don takes the host's seat this week, which is an interesting choice -- he's thoughtful, calm and the opposite of combative, which tends to produce a different kind of HIGNFY to the weeks when they bring in someone deliberately spiky. The guests are Chris McCausland and journalist Helen Lewis, both of whom are sharp enough to hold their own. Paul Merton and Ian Hislop do the rest. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Gogglebox – Channel 4, 9pm

Series 27, episode 10. The regulars on their sofas, watching the week's television and saying out loud the things the rest of us were thinking. A full week of news and entertainment gives the Gogglebox families more than enough material to work with. Available on Channel 4 streaming.

Big Cats 24/7 – BBC Two, 9pm

Last in series, episode 6. The final episode of the Okavango run ties together the storylines that have been building across the series. Golden Boy the lion is still causing trouble. Bo the cheetah cub has spent several episodes failing to master hunting, which has made her everyone's favourite underdog. There's a buffalo migration and a confrontation involving wild dogs that closes things out well. Available on BBC iPlayer.

The Young Offenders – BBC One, 9:30pm ★

This is the one. Series 5, episode 2 continues the Cork comedy's latest run with Conor and Jock -- Alex Murphy and Chris Walley -- in full gangster-ambitions mode. The Colombian jail has been and gone. Now, back in Cork and freshly ambitious, they've decided it's time to become proper criminal bosses rather than the spectacular amateurs they've always been. Billy Murphy returns as their henchman, which already tells you something about the quality of their recruitment process. They take two younger lookalikes -- Cormac and Jack -- under their wing and put them to work, which is essentially just outsourcing their mistakes to a newer generation. When the whole enterprise predictably falls apart, Norma Sheahan's lawyer Mollie O'Molloy arrives to do the actual work. Murphy and Walley are one of the best double acts in British or Irish comedy right now, and the show has maintained its quality across five series in a way most comedies can't manage. Available on BBC iPlayer.

The Assembly – ITV1, 10:05pm

New. Nicola Sturgeon faces the panel of unpredictable interviewers that The Assembly has deployed on political figures before, and this one apparently gets emotional in a way nobody quite expected. Sturgeon speaks openly about a miscarriage -- something she says she's never really discussed publicly -- and describes herself as someone who wants to wear her heart on her sleeve, freed from the pressure of managing hostile headlines. Whether it's revealing or managed, there's something worth watching in a politician operating without the usual defensive PR framing. Available on ITVX.

First Dates – Channel 4, 10pm

New episode. The first pairing tonight -- Nicole, former Lioness turned yoga teacher, and Matthew, a mindfulness teacher with a long-held dream of running sessions in a yurt -- sounds like either a perfect match or an experiment in whether you can have too much wellness in one relationship. Firefighter Abbie and dental nurse Charlotte both drink rum but disagree on cats, which is the kind of specific incompatibility that would genuinely sink things. And former detective Kerry and ex-copper turned tennis coach Andy share a birthday, which could go either way. First Dates keeps doing its thing and it keeps working. Available on Channel 4 streaming.

TV Guide UK: Late Night

The Claudia Winkleman Show – BBC One, 10:40pm

Claudia's late-night guests tonight are Ralph Fiennes, Anna Faris, Olivia Cooke and comedian Michelle de Swarte. That's a range of guests wide enough to produce at least a couple of interesting conversations. Fiennes in particular is usually worth listening to -- he tends to be unexpectedly candid about projects. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Live at the Apollo – BBC Two, 10pm

Episode 3. Gina Yashere hosts, with sets from Lost Voice Guy and Ed Gamble. Gamble in particular has been one of the more reliably funny stand-ups on television recently. Good for winding down. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Shania Twain at Glastonbury 2024 – BBC Four, 10:45pm

The BBC Four Shania Twain night concludes with her Legends slot performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2024, which went down a storm. If you've been watching the archive BBC performances and the Reel Stories documentary earlier in the evening, this is the live concert payoff. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Taskmaster – Channel 4, 11:05pm

Series 21 continues after First Dates. Greg Davies presiding, five contestants humiliating themselves for our entertainment. If you've been following this series, the Thursday episodes have been building nicely. Available on Channel 4 streaming.

Sport

Golf: The Masters Round 2 -- Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports Main Event, from 1pm. Augusta, round two. If the first round set things up well, Friday at The Masters tends to be where the field starts to separate.

Premier League: West Ham v Wolves -- Sky Sports Main Event, kick-off 8pm (coverage from 7:30pm). Both sides will have different ideas about how this evening should go.

Tennis: Monte Carlo Open and Linz Open -- Sky Sports Main Event/Tennis, from 10am.

The Young Offenders at 9:30pm on BBC One is the standout. Before that, Beyond Paradise at 8pm and Have I Got News for You with Monty Don at 9pm give BBC One a strong run from 7:30pm through. For drama and politics, The Assembly with Nicola Sturgeon on ITV1 at 10:05pm looks like it'll be worth staying up for. On Channel 4, First Dates brings a new batch from 10pm. BBC Four's Shania Twain night is worth switching to if you were a fan of the Glastonbury 2024 set.

TV Guide UK: Final Verdict

Tonight's tv guide has BBC One working harder than usual across the full evening. Beyond Paradise at 8pm, Have I Got News for You at 9pm and The Young Offenders at 9:30pm is as strong a consecutive two-and-a-half-hour run as BBC One regularly puts together on a Friday. The Young Offenders in particular -- now in its fifth series -- remains one of the warmest and funniest comedies on British television.

Elsewhere, The Assembly with Nicola Sturgeon on ITV1 at 10:05pm is the kind of programme that doesn't come along often: a politician genuinely off-script. Channel 4's 10pm First Dates is the lighter option if you want it. And BBC Four's Shania Twain night, starting from 9:15pm through to the Glastonbury 2024 concert, is a solid block if you're already a fan.
